Why Body Massages Are Good For You

We all dream of being massaged from head to toe with some of us having it done regularly as part of our lifestyle while others still think it’s a luxury and something they should have done but it’s not a priority.

This little article will either encourage you to continue with your massages if you are having them regularly or will push you to have one and see and feel the benefits to your daily life.

What is a body massage?

A massage is basically the manipulation of the soft tissue of the body. Your body can be massaged with hands, feet, elbow, knees, fingers, forearms or using a massage tool.

Where does the word massage originate from?

The word massage originates from the French word ‘le massage’ which means kneading. It also originates from the Arabic word ‘massa’ which means to touch or feel and the Latin word ‘massa’ which means to dough.. 

Why are body massages good for you?

Massages are good for you for the following reasons:

  1. They help dissipate stress in your body
  2. They encourage your body and mind to relax.
  3. A massage encourages healthy tissue repair.
  4. It loosens your muscles.
  5. Helps with body movement.

How often should you have a body massage?

It is advised to have a body massage twice a month.

Who is a body massage not suitable for?

The following individuals should avoid getting a body massage:

  1. If you have skin inflammation and bruising.
  2. If you have a skin disease, acne, cold sores, open sores, eczema and psoriasis.
  3. If you suffer from blood clots.
  4. If you have liver problems 
  5. If you have kidney problems.
  6. If you have cancer.
  7. If you have a high temperature and fever
  8. If you have open wounds on your skin.
  9. If you have burns.
  10. If you have varicose veins

Should you have a body massage if you are pregnant?

A body massage can have a relaxing effect on a pregnant woman however we advise to contact your GP or health professional first and ask their advice. If they say yes you should then ask them to recommend a therapist who has experience in how to massage pregnant women.  

What should you avoid after a body massage?

You should avoid heavy exercise and operating dangerous machinery because you may feel sleepy or a little disoriented.

Does having body hair matter during a massage?

Body hair is natural and NO it should not matter at all unless the type of massage you are having specifically requires you to remove your body hair.

Should you remove all your clothing during a massage?

You should not have to but depending on the type of massage you are having you may need to. It is best to discuss with your therapist and then see if you are comfortable. 

Wearing clothing similar to swimwear during a body massage is advised.

What if I fall asleep during a massage?

This is a good sign and it means the massage is really relaxing you!

Are there any side effects to having a body massage?

Occasionally you could feel nauseous, dizzy, get a headache, and feel sore all over your body. However, this will probably calm down after the massage.

If you get prolonged feelings of nausea, bleeding, bruising, skin irritation, anxiety and extreme fatigue after a body massage please consult your therapist immediately.
