Some may think that there is no such thing as the male menopause, it is only women who suffer from the menopause. But you would be very surprised to learn that it does exist, it is not a taboo subject anymore and is being accepted as a condition.

What is the male menopause?
The male menopause is an age related condition due to the imbalance of hormones in the body, usually the production of lower levels testosterone as the body ages.
What other names is the male menopause known as?
The male menopause is also referred to as andropause and androgen deficiency in the ageing male (ADAM).
From which age does the male menopause usually start?
Men between the ages of 45 years and 55 years usually start to experience symptoms.
What are the symptoms?
Some of the symptoms are –
- Depression
- Lack of energy
- Reduced sex drive
- Lack of focus and concentration
- Decreased motivation
- Loss of muscle mass
- Increase in size of the belly
- Increase in body fat
- Erectile dysfunction.
- Insomnia
- Hair loss
- Development of breasts (gynecomastia)
- Hot flushes
- Loss of body hair
- Mild anaemia
How long does the male menopause last?
The male menopause can last up to 20 years.
What can help the symptoms?
The following may help with the symptoms of the male menopause, however you must consult your GP and they will advise accordingly:
- Treatment with testosterone
- Supplements such as vitamin DD, amino acids, magnesium, vitamin B6 and saw palmetto.
- Zinc supplements.
- Regular exercise
- Reduction in drinking alcohol
- Talking therapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
- A healthy diet
- Reduction in stress levels.
- Regular good deep sleep.
