What is a Vegan Diet?

A vegan diet is one which is totally based on plants and foods derived from plants. These can be vegetables, fruits, nuts and grains. 

A person who engages in this form of diet is known as a vegan. Vegans do not consume any food that is animal based or derived from animals.

What foods can a vegan eat?

Vegans enjoy eating the following:

  1. Bread
  2. Rice
  3. Pasta
  4. Almond milk
  5. Soya milk
  6. Coconut milk
  7. Nuts 
  8. Seeds
  9. Beans
  10. Lentils
  11. Fruits
  12. Vegetables
  13. Vegetable oils

What foods can a vegan not eat?

Vegans do not eat the following:

  1. Honey
  2. Eggs
  3. Dairy products such as cheese, milk. Butter, and cream
  4. Mayonnaise
  5. All forms of fish
  6. All forms of meat

What are the health benefits of being a vegan?

There are multiple health benefits of being a vegan:

  1. Reduce the chance of getting diabetes
  2. Reduce the chance of heart disease because eating plant based foods lowers cholesterol levels.
  3. Reduces the chance of getting some cancers such as colon cancer.

Where can you get certain nutrients from if you are a vegan?

Vitamin D – You can get your vitamin D from soy, fortified orange juice, mushrooms, plant based milk and 20 minutes in the sun.

Vitamin B12 – Fortified cereals and plant based milks, soy, and supplements.

Protein – Soy foods, chickpeas, peanut butter, nuts, seeds, grains and lentils

Essential fatty acids – Leafy green vegetables, algae, beans, whole grains, flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, edamame, seaweed, almonds and walnuts.
