What Is A Superfood?

The food industry says that superfoods are great for your health. 

A must in your diet.

They also say that superfoods are a natural healthy fuel for your day.

How often have you heard the above statements and been told how brilliant superfoods are for your health? Probably quite often. It’s as if these ‘superfoods’ have just recently been invented or discovered and now they are all the rage.

However, you would be very surprised to know that these superfoods have been around for centuries and you can find them very easily in your local market or store.

Labelling them superfoods is a way for the food industry to bring them to your attention even though the health benefits of these superfoods have been known since time began

What are superfoods?

A superfood is an item of food or drink which is very rich in nutrients, antioxidants, fibre, and/or other bioactive substances.

Which foods are considered superfoods?

The following foods are classified as superfoods:

  1. Broccoli, brussel sprouts, spinach, kale, swiss chard and cauliflower.
  2. Blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, acai, strawberries, pomegranate and cranberries.
  3. Black beans, lentils, peas, chickpeas, peanuts and kidney beans.
  4. Sardines, salmon, tuna, prawns, trout, and herring.
  5. Tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, celery, sweet potato, and beetroot.
  6. Olive oil.
  7. Almonds, cashew, macadamia and brazil nuts.
  8. Pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds and sunflower seeds.
  9. Yoghurts, kefir, kombucha and kimchi
  10. Onions, ginger, turmeric, and garlic.
  11. Oranges, lemons, and grapefruit.
  12. Green tea.
  13. Spirulina
  14. Manuka honey
  15. Quinoa
  16. Seaweed
  17. Mushrooms
  18. Chlorella
  19. Eggs
  20. Wheatgrass

Superfoods come from a wide variety of sources

As you can see from the list above, superfoods can originate from animals or be plant based. There is something for everyone.
