Your Chronology Explained
(With Template)

Also Referred To As A Background Summary

WHEN IS YOUR CHRONOLOGY ASKED FOR?

During a child arrangements case – You can be asked by a judge or magistrate to produce a chronology for a hearing. The chronology will detail a timeline of events of what has happened.

During a financial settlement case – Once you or your ex-partner has submitted form A to start the court proceedings for division of assets, finances, and pensions, the court handling this will contact you and your ex-partner by letter. This letter will inform you of the date and time of the first appointment/court hearing called the first directions appointment (FDA). In the same letter, the court will ask both you and your ex-partner to send 5 documents to the court and to each other or each others solicitors by a certain date. One of these 5 documents is YOUR CHRONOLOGY. The other 4 documents are form E, statement of issues, questionnaire for the other party, and form G.

WHAT IS YOUR CHRONOLOGY USED FOR?

Your chronology should be a concise list with dates in chronological order of the key life events and incidents in your marriage leading up to the divorce. It is sometimes referred to as a background summary and should be no more than 1-2 pages long. This will help the judge at the first directions appointment (FDA).

WHAT OTHER NAME IS A CHRONOLOGY KNOWN AS?

Your chronology is also known as the timeline of events.

YOU CAN USE OUR I AM LIP TEMPLATE

You will need to produce your own chronology as it is not a government form.

The team here at I AM L.I.P have produced a chronology template for you to download and fill in. Once you have filled in it you can print a hard copy. Click on the upper right corner of the document below to access it. Once accessed, we recommend you click the ‘Open Original’ button on the upper right corner to download the document on Microsoft Word, or you can download the document on other applications such as Google Docs. The BLACK writing is part of the template document and should not be altered. The RED writing is where you should edit the template document as it is there to guide you on what to include.

PLEASE NOTE – Our team at I AM L.I.P have produced these templates with the focus being to cater to every type of user regardless of their skill set, technical capabilities, literacy comprehension and level of neurodiversity. We understand that when most people are completing these templates, they can be under immense emotional distress due to the difficult process of divorce. Therefore, these templates are here to make the process easier.
