We asked the whole office here at I AM LIP what they were likely to do when their grey hairs start to appear. The results were surprising. It was fifty fifty. Half the office said they would keep the grey hair and the other half said they would cover it up. We decided to investigate!
Why do people get grey hair?
Some reasons why grey hairs appear are:
- Grey hairs are age related – Our hair follicles contain melanocytes. Melanocytes are cells which produce colour pigments that determine the colour of your hair. As we age the amount of melanocytes in our follicles reduce and.the melanocytes themselves also start to produce less and less pigments resulting in grey or white hair appearing.
- Stress – Stress can reduce the production of pigment in melanocytes resulting in premature grey hair.
- Genetics – Your genetics and family history can also determine the amount of colour pigment your melanocytes can produce and for how long.
- Nutrient deficiencies – Certain nutrient deficiencies in the body can affect how the melanocytes function. The nutrients are generally vitamin B6, vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin B12, copper and biotin.
- Health problems – Some premature greying can be down to a health problem such as thyroid disease.
Why do some people decide to keep their grey hair?
The reasons why some people keep grey hair are:
- It can make you look intelligent and wise
- It can make you appear mature.
- It can empower some people.
- They cannot put the effort into dyeing their hair.
- Some people are firm believers that beauty transcends age so grey hairs make them feel and look beautiful. They want to make a stand.
- Grey hair suits some people.
Why do some people decide to cover their grey hair?
The reasons why some people decide to cover up their grey hair are:
- It can make them feel and appear younger.
- If they have premature grey hair then they may want to appear the age they are.
- Grey hair does not suit them or their lifestyle.
Can you stop grey hair from appearing?
Unfortunately you cannot. Which means only one thing, either embrace it or cover it. The choice is yours!
