1) Sodium has the periodic symbol ‘Na’.

2) When sodium combines with chlorine it forms sodium chloride which is also known as salt. Salt is about 40% sodium and 60% chloride. 

3) The words salt and sodium are used interchangeably all over the world.

4) Salt and sodium are naturally abundant in seawater and rock salt.

5) There are different types of salt for sale such as Himalayan pink salt, table salt, rock salt and sea salt.   

6) Salt and sodium are naturally found in eggs, meats, dairy products, and seafood. 

7) Today high levels of salt are contained in many processed foods and fast foods.

8) Processed foods that contain high levels of salt are bread, crisps, nuts, bacon, sausages, salami, French fries, canned soups, cookies, and cakes. 

9) Our bodies are good at sorting out the levels of sodium in our bodies. If the level is low our body will encourage us to drink water by becoming thirsty. If the levels of sodium are high, then the kidney will remove it. 

10) Salt is used for preserving food.

11) It is also used in the tanning and dyeing processes

12) It can also be used for bleaching purposes. 

13) Sodium regulates body fluids and thus reduces the risk of low blood pressure.

14) Too much sodium in the body over stimulates the immune system.

15) Too much salt could possibly lead to stomach cancer.

16) Too little salt could lead to an increase in high levels of bad cholesterol in the blood.

17) Babies under 1 years must not ingest salt because their kidneys are not properly developed

18) The recommended daily allowance (RDA) is – 

  1. Adult – 2.3 g

19) An excess of sodium in the body can lead to – 

  1. High blood pressure
  2. Cardiovascular disease
  3. Kidney stones.
  4. Osteoporosis.
  5. Hypertension

20) Sodium deficiency leads to – 

  1. Confusion
  2. Dizziness
  3. Seizures
  4. Sluggish
  5. Lethargic
  6. High blood fat levels.
  7. Dehydration
