1) Iodine has the periodic symbol ‘I’.

2) The only form of iodine found in nature is Iodide. The Iodide form is when iodine combines with another element to form a salt.

3) It is an essential mineral because the human body cannot make it. It must be obtained from the diet.

4) Foods that contain iodine are iodised salt, saltwater fish, seaweed (nori seaweed in sushi), and dairy products.

5) Iodine is present in human breast milk and formula milk.

6) Ingesting an Iodine tablet after being exposed to radiation can help protect the thyroid. 

7) Iodine is vital for proper function of hormones.

8) Iodine is important for foetal brain development.

9) It is very important for the thyroid to function properly.

10) It is used to treat an underactive thyroid gland.

11) Iodine can help treat fibrocystic breast disease. This is not a cancer disease.

12) Iodine is a great water disinfectant.

13) Liquid iodine can kill the bacteria around light small cuts. Not deep cuts or wounds.
