Cleansing your face to remove dirt, excess oil and makeup before bedtime is essential for young, healthy, and vibrant skin. It leaves your skin able to breathe and prevents potential breakouts from bacteria build-up, so it’s pretty important.
Using oil to cleanse your face is a gentle, soft, and harmless method that doesn’t involve harsh chemicals or rough scrubbing. Instead, it dissolves dirt, makeup and excess oils when massaged onto your face, leaving your skin soft, supple and clean.
Using this method can be a soothing experience for your skin, being a gentler, more effective alternative to using soap and detergent cleansers. It also works against oil-based, water-based, oil free, and waterproof products on your face, so it’s also pretty ideal to use.
What exactly does it achieve?
Cleansing with oil will achieve the following:
- Removes makeup from your face.
- Removes excess oil
- Removes dirt.
- Removes dead skin
- Removes pollutants
- Tones your skin
- Clean clogged pores
- Relaxes your facial muscles
- Prevents potential breakouts
- Prevents dryness
It’s one of the best ways to cleanse and love your skin. But how do you know which ones to use?
The oil you use to cleanse your face should be suited to you personally so you can enjoy the process. The one that you feel works best on your skin. If you need help finding the right one, these are some of the best oils you can use –
- Sunflower oil
- Olive oil
- Grapeseed oil
- Jojoba oil
- Sweet almond oil
- Avocado oil
- Coconut oil
You can either use one of the oils above by themselves or you can add some castor oil to the oils above to make a blend. Castor oil moisturises the skin and has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, making it a great option for your skin.
Cleansing with a certain skin type
If you have a certain skin type, add the recommended oils in a blend according to the following ratios –
OILY SKIN – 50% castor oil and 50% of one of the oils listed above. Jojoba oil is excellent for oily skin.
NORMAL/BALANCED SKIN – 30% castor oil and 70% of one of the oils listed above.
DRY SKIN – 25% castor oil and 75% of one of the oils listed above. Coconut oil is effective on dry skin.
You can also use the following blend of 25% castor oil, 25% olive oil, 25% coconut oil and 25% avocado oil.
The type of care our skin needs depends on the type of skin we have.
The step by step process
Follow our steps below on how to cleanse your skin properly, leaving you feeling refreshed and clean.
STEP 1 – Place ½ a tablespoon of your personal oil blend on the palm of your hand. Rub both of your hands together for 10-15 seconds. This will warm the oil between your hands.
STEP 2 – Gently massage your personal oil blend all over your face using gentle circular motions with your fingers. This will help the oil seep into your pores. Massage for up to 1 minute.
STEP 3 – Soak a soft face towel in clean hot water and squeeze. If you can, lay down and place the hot face towel over your face. Leave it there for 20-30 seconds. This process will open your pores.
STEP 4 – Remove the face towel and use it to gently wipe the oil from your face. Be careful not to pull your skin. Rinse the face towel and gently wipe your face again removing the rest of the oil.
STEP 5 – Wash your face with warm water and gently dab dry with another soft towel.
When is it best done?
Cleansing your skin with an oil or oil blend is best done before bedtime.
