Is Dry Brushing Good For You?

Dry brushing is a practice that goes back thousands of years, believed to have originated with the ancient Egyptians despite existing in many cultures around the world such as in India where it is a part of Ayurvedic medicine. It has been put to practice by many for its numerous health benefits on the body.

So what exactly is it? Dry brushing is the process of brushing your skin with a stiff bristled brush without the use of a liquid. 

What are the benefits of dry brushing?

Dry brushing has the following positive effects:

  1. It removes dead skin cells.
  2. It takes away flaky skin.
  3. It exfoliates the skin.
  4. It can improve the appearance of cellulite. 
  5. Increases blood flow to the skin.
  6. Increases blood circulation around the body.
  7. It can help with digestion issues.
  8. Helps the body detoxify.
  9. It can help with lymphatic drainage.

It is recommended that you dry brush once or twice a week only. You can also combine the dry brushing with a small amount of oil or mild soap.

How do you dry brush your skin?

It is recommended that when you dry brush an area of your body, you should brush the skin towards the heart and chest.

It is best to dry brush your skin in round circular clockwise movements. 

You should start brushing your feet first, then your calves, knees and thighs then stomach, breasts, arms (brush towards your armpits), neck and face.

If you dry brush your face you should start with your forehead, brush down towards your heart. After your forehead you should brush your nose, then cheekbones then your chin.

Should you shower before or after dry brushing?

You should shower after dry brushing. You do not have to but it is advised that you should. Showering will take away the dead skin cells. You can then massage a moisturiser or natural oil such as coconut oil on your skin to moisturise it.

Who should avoid dry brushing?

Individuals who suffer from the following conditions should avoid dry brushing:

  1. Sensitive skin.
  2. Acne.
  3. Skin cancer.
  4. Sunburnt skin.
  5. Anyone with a skin infection.
  6. Eczema.
  7. Psoriasis.
  8. Skin moles and warts.

How much pressure should you apply?

It is advisable to apply gentle pressure while dry brushing so as not to damage your skin. On certain areas of your body such as your heel you can apply more pressure.

 

When is the best time to dry brush your skin?

The best time to dry brush is in the morning. This will help your lymphatic system remove toxins from your body.

Where can I purchase a dry brush?

They are available from most health food stores and online.

How do I look after my dry brush?

You must wash your dry brush with soap and hot water at least once a week. You also must not share your dry brush with anyone.
