Help With Your Menopause Part 2 – Conventional Medicine

In part 1 we discussed natural remedies and products that can help menopausal women. Here in part 2 we will discuss the benefits of conventional medicines. 

There are many women going through divorce who are perimenopausal or menopausal. The menopause denotes the end of a woman’s monthly menstrual cycles and the reduction of the level of female hormones in the body such as oestrogen. HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (HRT)

HRT is the treatment of taking oestrogen into the body to replace the oestrogen that is being depleted because of the menopause. There are many ways to take oestrogen (tablets, skin patches, gels, or implants).

If your womb is intact then you could be asked to also take the hormone progesterone along with the oestrogen. This is to protect the womb from the oestrogen. There are many ways to take progesterone (a coil, tablets, and patches). 

HRT will help improve many of the symptoms of the menopause (vaginal dryness, mood swings and hot flushes) and reduce the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease. 

TESTOSTERONE GEL

Some women can be prescribed testosterone gel or cream to help improve sex drive. Testosterone gel/cream is usually prescribed by a specialist doctor and often when HRT has failed at improving the woman’s sex drive. However, unwanted hair growth and acne could be a side effect so please consult your doctor. 

OESTROGEN TREATMENT

An oestrogen ring, tablet, or cream can be inserted in the vagina will release oestrogen to help with vaginal dryness. The oestrogen is absorbed by the vaginal tissues.

GABAPENTIN

This is an epilepsy drug that can be used by women who cannot take oestrogen. Gabapentin can help with hot flushes. 

LOW DOSE ANTIDEPRESSANTS

These drugs can be given to women who cannot take oestrogen. They drugs can help with hot flushes.

CLONIDINE

This is a blood pressure drug that can be used by women who cannot take oestrogen. Clonidine can help with hot flushes.
