INCREASE INTAKE OF CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D

The menopause can cause the onset of osteoporosis which can result in brittle bones and hip fractures. Calcium and vitamin D are two nutrients that can help reduce bone loss. Calcium helps to build strong bones and maintain them while vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium. You can increase your intake of these two nutrients by taking a supplement or eating food rich in them. Foods rich in calcium are milk, cheese, yoghurt, spinach, kale, sardines and beans. Vitamin D is produced by the skin when it is exposed to sunlight. Foods rich in vitamin D are eggs and oily fish.

INCREASE INTAKE IN FOODS THAT CONTAIN PHYTOESTROGENS

Phytoestrogens are plant based compounds that have the same effect on the body as the female sex hormone oestrogen. Oestrogen levels in the body reduce during the menopause. It has been shown that a diet rich in phytoestrogens reduces the amount of hot flushes and night sweats a menopausal woman experiences. Foods rich in phytoestrogens are sesame seeds, flaxseeds, linseeds, soya products, and tofu. Phytoestrogen supplements are also available from your health food store.
